What is Pilates?

Pilates is a body-conditioning routine that seeks to build flexibility, strength, endurance, and coordination without adding muscle "bulk," otherwise knows as the "Balanced Body" approach. With over five hundred different exercises, Pilates also increases circulation and helps to sculpt the body and strengthen the body's core, or "powerhouse."

Who founded Pilates?

Joseph H. Pilates, the founder of the Pilates exercise method, was born in Germany. As a child, Joseph was in poor health, living with asthma and other feeble childhood conditions. In an attempt to build strength, he took up many different sports and eventually developed into quite an accomplished athlete. As he reached adulthood, he became a nurse in Great Britain during World War I. With time, he designed exercise methods and equipment for immobilized patients and soldiers.

How do you "do" Pilates?

Although there are two ways to exercise in Pilates, TruCore focuses on one method. The first method focuses on the mat exercises, which requires only a floor mat and training. These exercises are designed so that your body uses its own weight as resistance. The second method of Pilates uses a variety of machines and highly-trained instructors to tone and strengthen the body, using the principle of resistance. TruCore follows the second method in the studio.
